The start of the impeachment process against Georgian President Salomé Zurabishvili will worsen polarization in the country, despite the fact that fighting against it is one of the conditions to obtain candidate status for the European Union, said the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, at a press conference with the Prime Minister of Georgia on September 8 by Irakli Garibashvili in Tbilisi.
The ruling Georgian Dream party decided to initiate impeachment proceedings because Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili violated the Constitution and, without the consent of the country’s government, made visits to EU countries to discuss granting candidate status to Georgia. Georgian authorities have repeatedly claimed that Zurabishvili’s statements harm Georgia’s prospects for European integration.
“This is a risk that will cause even more tension and increase polarization. All institutions must work together and firmly support the country on its path towards the European Union. “Georgia has the potential to be successful in this process.”“, Borrell assessed the decision of the Georgian authorities.
According to him, Georgia has strong state institutions and an active civil sector, which “Cooperation is needed at this historic moment”.

Let us remember that to complete the impeachment procedure the parliamentary majority has 84 votes and a minimum of 100 votes is required.
Salome Zurabishvili previously stated in a speech in the Georgian parliament that the Georgian authorities, unlike the people, do not deserve to be granted EU candidate status.
