A man was arrested this Thursday in Clermont-Ferrand, France, on suspicion of making death threats against a school principal after his daughter was denied entry to the establishment because she was wearing the abaya dress worn by some Muslim women. The information was provided by a French TV channel. BFM.
This is the second time in a week that high school officials have prevented a girl from entering the building. The father called the institution, threatening to kill the director, which is why he was detained by the police.
The incident in Clermont-Ferrand led to increased police activity in the region.
This Tuesday, the first day of the school year, a total of almost 300 students showed up to classes in France wearing Muslim abayas, despite the ban announced by French Education Minister Gabriel Attal on August 28th.
“When someone enters a classroom, they should not be able to determine the religion of the students just by looking at them,” the minister said on August 28.
In France, the principle of secularism is enshrined in the first article of the constitution, which states that the country “is a secular republic.”
In 2004, wearing the hijab in schools was banned. Later, in 2010, the use of the Islamic burqa in public places was banned.
