Portuguese coach Roberto Martinez announced this Friday that Gonçalo Ramos will start on Monday against Luxembourg in the sixth round of Euro 2024 qualifying, replacing suspended captain Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Ronaldo gave everything today to achieve victory. When I saw that he received a yellow card, I already knew that he would not be able to play against Luxembourg. We have options to continue winning. Goncalo Ramos will have the opportunity to help the team. He worked very hard during the week,” Roberto Martinez said at a press conference.
The national coach spoke to reporters after the 1-0 win in Bratislava after confirming Goncalo Ramos’ starting role in place of Ronaldo in an RTP “flash interview”.
“We have to show that other players can help the team. Goncalo Ramos will have that opportunity,” he said.
The national team captain has scored five goals in five matches in qualifying for the next European Championship but will miss the match in the Algarve due to punishment after receiving a yellow card in Bratislava in the 62nd minute.
