On September 9, employees of the Erdre-et-Loire hospital center in Anceny organized a demonstration against the closure of the obstetrics department, Ouest France reports.
This Saturday, employees of the Erdre-et-Loire hospital center, in the city of Anceny (about 40 kilometers from Nantes), held a protest against the closure of the obstetrics department. The hospital staff, concerned and dissatisfied with the information circulating about the imminent closure of the maternity ward, chose the Esso roundabout as a meeting point, from where they could reach the hospital and then the town hall.
“We have been threatening to close the maternity ward for about fifteen years, we already know that from time to time they closed it for 24 hours when there was a shortage of staff.”testified Anna, a midwife at Ancenis since 1995. “In the maternity ward I keep a notebook with the names of all my babies. I have 1,900 names on it.”“” he added enthusiastically.
“As a member of the FO (Force Ouvrière, Labor Struggle) union of Saint-Nazaire, I am here to support the staff and defend their motherhood, to unite us with the same purpose.”explained Christel, a mother of three.
Claude Gaudin, secretary of the local CGT Ancenis union, said in his speech: “The situation in hospitals and clinics is in the news again. “The definitive closure of the obstetrics department was announced in November due to the inability to find an obstetrician-gynecologist to hire and the retirement of an older gynecologist…”. And although on September 5 the director of the hospital center announced that they were hiring an obstetrician-gynecologist, the issue of closing the maternity hospital was not removed from the agenda.
