Quotas on the number of boys and girls entering metropolitan schools in Japan will be eliminated. This was reported by The Asahi Shimbun on September 10.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Private Secondary Schools Association are said to hold a Public-Private Relations Council meeting on September 11 to formalize the agreement.
The education board’s new rule will apply to current third-grade secondary school students who want to be admitted to government co-educational secondary schools, sources said.
Tokyo was the last Japanese prefecture to decide to abandon gender restrictions, the publication’s sources say.
Please note that in 2011, Tokyo began a gradual transition to a joint admission system for children, regardless of gender, based solely on grades.
The removal of gender quotas is expected to reduce the number of children admitted to secondary schools in the capital by around 600, according to an estimate published in 2021.
