A Tanzanian court has released previously detained opposition leader Tundu Lissa on bail, Reuters reports on September 11.
Lissu was arrested on the night of September 10 in the Arusha region of northern Tanzania on suspicion of holding an illegal demonstration. A few hours later he was released.
Lissu, leader of the African country’s largest opposition party, Chadema, returned to Tanzania from Belgium in January 2023 following the death of President John Magufuli.
The current president of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, after coming to power, lifted the ban on political demonstrations that was in force during the Magufuli government.
The Chadema party and its leader are also fiercely opposed to Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is accused of human rights violations and corruption.
