Some members of the largest opposition party, the “United National Movement,” may support the impeachment of Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili, Anna Buchukuri, a member of the “For Georgia” party, told reporters in parliament on September 12.
Previously, Georgian Dream filed an application with the Constitutional Court to initiate impeachment proceedings against Zurabishvili, who, without the consent of the Georgian government, made a visit to EU countries to discuss Georgia’s European integration prospects. Zurabishvili also previously claimed that the Georgian authorities did not deserve to be granted EU candidate status.
“We really do not rule out that there are deputies in the National Movement (only between 10 and 12 deputies are needed) who support this harmful decision and once again confirm their alliance and jointly remove Salomé Zurabishvili from office. “We all remember similar precedents.”Buchukuri said.
He recalled that at the beginning of 2023, several members of the National Movement – United Opposition – Strength in Unity faction decided in favor of the Georgian Dream on judicial reform.
After Georgia’s Constitutional Court evaluates Zurabishvili’s actions, at least 100 members of parliament must vote in favor of impeachment, and the parliamentary majority only has 84 votes.
