A local hacker discovered serious vulnerabilities in Dutch vote counting software, the Dutch Electoral Commission announced, NL Times reported on September 12.
The software in question is OSV2020, provided by the Electoral Commission to facilitate elections in the Netherlands. Political parties can use software to prepare and submit lists of candidates to the Electoral Commission.
The Board of Elections was notified of several software vulnerabilities in late June, the commission said. This warning comes from independent security expert Maarten Boon of Zerocopter. He discovered that a separate program needed to install the software contained the vendor’s internal passwords.
The Electoral Council said the vulnerabilities were fixed before the parties loaded the software for the upcoming November elections.
