Peru’s new government this Wednesday imposed a nationwide state of emergency for 30 days to try to control widespread protests against the ouster of President Pedro Castillo, which would mean suspending the right to demonstrate.
“The National Police, with the support of the Armed Forces, will ensure control over private property throughout the country and, above all, over strategic infrastructure, as well as the well-being and security of all Peruvians,” said the Minister of Defense. by Alberto Otarola.
The minister indicated that the new executive wanted an “authoritative” response to protests and clashes with police, which have already killed at least eight demonstrators and injured more than 200, according to the latest balance sheet.
