Hungary will maintain its veto on Ukrainian grain imports, despite what it considers “false propaganda” from Brussels and Kyiv, to protect its farmers, the Hungarian Foreign Minister said this Friday.
“We will not let Hungarian farmers go bankrupt, and neither the propaganda of Brussels (the European Union) or Kyiv will stop us in this regard,” said Peter Szijjártó, adding that the opening of borders to grain from Ukraine was initially decided this way. that agricultural products were exported to the African continent.
The goal was not to “flood” Central European countries with wheat and other Ukrainian grains, the head of diplomacy in Budapest said.
Peter Szijjártó did not specify which “lodge of Brussels and Kyiv” he was talking about.
Countries bordering Ukraine reached an agreement with the European Commission in May 2022 to ban the import of Ukrainian cereals without customs duties, the prices of which have harmed the production of local farmers.
The veto expires this Friday, and four countries in the region: Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and Romania have already announced they will maintain the ban.
Bulgaria announced that it would lift restrictions on the import of Ukrainian products.
Szijjártó clarified that Budapest’s measures do not concern the transit of Ukrainian products through Hungary.
This Friday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban also announced that the country intends to extend the ban on Ukrainian products.
