This Friday, the Assembly of the Republic unanimously expressed its “deep regret for the victims” of the earthquake in Morocco and the floods in Libya, as well as “its full solidarity” with the two countries.
The voices of condolence written by the President of Parliament, Augusto Santos Silva, were approved by all colleagues.
The Morocco Earthquake Initiative recalls that an earthquake struck the country on the night of September 8, “causing a dramatic scenario of destruction.”
“The number of victims to be mourned is still unknown, with the preliminary ratio of dead and injured very high, numbering in the thousands,” said the vote, which also emphasized that the earthquake “is considered the largest in the recent history of Morocco.” , after a strong earthquake in 1960 that occurred in the city of Agadir.”
In addition to mourning the victims, the text continues, the earthquake “severely damaged the medina of Marrakesh, a UNESCO World Heritage Site,” adding that “early reports indicate the destruction of important sites of the city’s historical and cultural heritage, in addition to several public buildings such as schools and medical centers in the earthquake-affected region.”
The vote recalls that aid groups from all over the country mobilized “from the first hour to rescue survivors still under the rubble, a mission that the international community is ready to support in solidarity, including Portugal.”
The text about the floods in Libya states that “Last Sunday, a strong storm struck eastern Libya, leaving behind a heavy trail of destruction, the extent of which is not yet fully known.”
“Storm Daniel, which hit Greece last week, particularly devastated the coastal city of Derna, where the collapse of two dams dramatically contributed to the high death toll and partial destruction of the city,” it adds.
The vote also states that “rescue teams are trying to respond to the catastrophic situation, but movement on the ground is hampered by blocked or even destroyed communications routes, as well as widespread failures in power supplies and communications networks.”
In both draft votes, parliament expresses its “deepest regret” for the victims and “its full solidarity” to the authorities and people of Morocco and Libya.
