This Saturday, Iranian authorities briefly detained Amjad Amini, the father of Mahsa Amini. The young woman, who was 22, died a year ago while in prison for violating Iran’s dress code by refusing to wear the Islamic hijab.
The woman’s death sparked a wave of criticism and protests against the regime and led to violent demonstrations. This Saturday, Iranian security forces had a strong presence in the Kurdish regions to prevent possible disobedience.
Some social media posts cited by Reuters indicated authorities were stationed near Mahsa’s home in western Iran.
Mahsa’s family announced that they would hold a religious ceremony at the deceased’s grave, despite warnings from the Iranian government to the contrary. No conflicts have been recorded on the land of the girl who died in 2022.
More than 500 people, including seven minors, have died in protests following the death of a young Kurdish woman, human rights groups say.
