UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Tuesday that the “most immediate threat to the future of humanity” is an overheating planet, stressing that recorded climate change is “just the beginning.”
In his opening speech to the debate of the 78th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 78), Guterres called for “resolve” in the fight against an overheating planet, arguing that climate change is not just climate change, but one that is changing life on the planet, killing and devastate communities.
“Around the world, we are not only seeing rising temperatures, but also accelerating sea level rise, melting glaciers, the spread of deadly diseases, species disappearing and cities at risk. And this is just the beginning,” he noted.
