Almost 400,000 Brazilians live in Portugal legally and make up about 40% of the foreign population, SEF said, adding that this year alone some 150,000 have received residence permits in the country.
In a response sent to Lusa, the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) reports that 393,000 Brazilian citizens live in Portugal, with more cases in the municipalities of Lisbon, Cascais, Sintra, Porto and Braga.
There were 239,744 Brazilians living in the country at the end of 2022, meaning the community has grown by around 36% this year alone, with around 153,000 granted residency since January.
SEF is justifying this increase by introducing in March a new model for issuing residence permits to citizens of the Community of Portuguese-Language Countries (CPLP), with the creation of a special portal for the issuance of these titles.
Since March, more than 154,000 Portuguese-speaking immigrants, most of them Brazilians, have applied for residence permits through the “CPLP portal,” with the document already issued to more than 140,000 people, according to SEF.
The security service reports that Brazilian citizens make up 74.5% of CPLP residence permit requests, followed by citizens of Angola with 9.6%, Sao Tome and Principe with 6.4% and Cape Verde with 4.4%. .
The platform to automatically obtain a residence permit in Portugal for CPLP citizens went live on March 13 and is aimed at Portuguese-speaking immigrants whose processes are pending at SEF until December 31, 2022, as well as those who have a CPLP visa issued by a Portuguese. consulates after October 31, 2022.
SEF clarifies that in many cases these citizens were already in the country and by the end of 2022 they had officially expressed interest in obtaining a residence permit.
The Foreigners and Borders Service also stresses that this is a computerized process that involves “automated security queries to relevant databases and consultation with the Institute of Registers and Notaries, and is currently undergoing a more detailed analysis of 6,000 queries.”
SEF’s preliminary data also indicates that there are currently approximately 980,000 foreign nationals living in the country with residence permits, including titles granted through the “CPLP portal” and temporary protection granted to Ukrainian refugees.
The number of foreigners living in Portugal has risen from 781,915 at the end of 2022 to 980,000 today.
