The vast majority of the Spanish team’s players have agreed this Wednesday to return to the team to face Sweden and Switzerland in the Nations League, following an agreement with the Federation and the government, the president of the Supreme Sports Council announced.
“We have reached a number of agreements that will be developed and signed tomorrow by the Federation and the Supreme Sports Council,” Victor Francos said this morning after several hours of negotiations with the players.
“Of the 23 players called up, two asked to leave the internship for reasons of (…) personal discomfort,” he added.
The government spokesman did not reveal the names of the two players in question, but stressed that they would not be sanctioned, contrary to what was previously announced.
New Spain coach Monse Thomé surprised on Monday by calling up 15 world champions and other players for the games against Sweden and Switzerland, who had asked not to be called up until changes were made at the Spanish football federation (RFEF). after the scandal surrounding the forced kiss of former President Luis Rubiales and soccer player Jenny Hermoso during the World Cup in Australia.
On Tuesday, despite Rubiales’ sacking, Spain players said they did not want to return to play until the RFEF was completely reformulated.
“The players have told us that they are concerned about the need for deep changes in the RFEF, and the federation has promised that these changes will happen immediately,” Francos said on Wednesday.
According to the Spanish press, one of these immediate changes could be the departure of Secretary General Andreu Camps.
Francos said the agreement provides for the development of Spanish legislation in matters of “gender policy, progress in equal pay, in the structures of sports and especially women’s football.”
