At least 8,000 people in the town of Moatize in the Tete province of central Mozambique were left without electricity due to vandalism on medium voltage poles, state-owned company Eletricidade de Moçambique said this Wednesday.
These are the residents of the districts of Citata and Capanga who have been facing the problem since Monday, according to a statement by the Eletricidade de Moçambique (EDM) released to the media this Wednesday.
“Equipment is currently being mobilized to replace the damaged material and ensure the speedy restoration of normal power supply to affected consumers,” the company says.
EDM described energy theft and vandalism of electricity infrastructure as the company’s “biggest challenges”, warning that the situation threatens the goal of universal energy access for all Mozambicans by 2030.
In 2022, according to company data published in December, EDM lost about 41 million metises (584 thousand euros) as a result of 265 cases of electrical infrastructure vandalism reported in the country.
In addition to losses from energy theft and electrical infrastructure vandalism recorded over the past four years, the facility “lost the ability to supply power” to more than 500,000 new customers, EDM said at the time.
