King of England proposes climate protection agreement to French Senate

This Thursday, the King of England proposed to the French Senate that France and the UK sign a “Sustainable Development Agreement” that would “more effectively” respond to the “global climate and biodiversity emergency.”

Inspired by the “Entente Cordiale” (“Hearty Understanding”) signed in 1904 as the basis for a rapprochement between the two countries, until then traditional adversaries, Carlos III explained that the initiative was inspired by “the example of the past” and sought to “overcome enormous challenges peace,” in a speech delivered to French deputies in French and English.

The announcement came a day after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced the delay of several landmark U.K. climate policy measures, a decision that has been condemned in economic circles and even among the Conservatives in power.

The King, who completes the second day of his state visit to France this Thursday, promised the French Senate to “do everything in its power to strengthen the relationship” between the United Kingdom and France.

“The United Kingdom will always be one of France’s closest allies” and “together a potential [dos dois países] it is limitless,” he emphasized in French.

Charles III also guaranteed the “unshakable determination” of Britain and France to see Ukraine “triumphant”.

The monarch emphasized Paris and London’s support for Kyiv in the face of “Russia’s unjustified aggression on the European continent.”

Carlos III’s speech received a standing ovation from deputies for more than one and a half minutes.

“Applause that makes us dream,” commented the President of the French Senate, Gérard Larcher.

The visit to France, which began on Wednesday, is intended to highlight the friendship between the two countries after the trip was postponed in March due to violent social protests over pension reform in France.

The visit is part of a recent rapprochement in Franco-British relations after years marked by tense Brexit negotiations and the affront caused by the AUKUS alliance, which forced Australia to swap purchases of French submarines for British ones.

The king will end his trip on Friday with a stop in Bordeaux, where he will meet people affected by the region’s 2022 wildfires and also visit the Forêt Experimentale, a project designed to monitor climate impacts on urban forests, and a pioneering vineyard. in a sustainable approach to wine production.
