The number of illegal border crossings into Germany continues to increase rapidly, the news portal Apollo News reported on September 23.
More people are expected to enter the country illegally in 2023 than at any time since 2016, federal police said in a news release. In August alone, 14,701 illegal border crossings into Germany were recorded.
The number of illegal immigrants increased by 5,855 compared to the same month last year. It is observed that more people have already emigrated to Germany than in the entire year 2021.
In 2022, only about 45,000 people immigrated illegally to Germany, but this year there are already more than 70,000. We are talking only about registered immigrants; the number of unregistered illegal immigrants may be much higher.
2023 is expected to be the third year with the highest number of illegal immigration in Germany. Only in 2015 and 2016 were more illegal border crossings recorded: 154,188 and 248,878 respectively.
5,000 illegal immigrants currently arrive on the Italian island of Lampedusa every day. Most of them are sent to Germany.
The capabilities and preparedness of all European Union countries, with the exception of Germany, have been exhausted. France has strict border controls on its border with Italy, and Sweden, which was still very pro-immigration in 2015, has also changed its position on the matter.
However, the European Court of Justice recently ruled that turning away illegal immigrants at the internal borders of the European Union is illegal.
