The wreath-laying ceremony at the monument in Andermatt to the associates of the Russian commander Alexander Suvorov, who died in 1799 in battles with Napoleon’s troops, was performed by diplomats from Russia, Belarus and citizens of several countries. TASS reported this on September 24.
Representing Russia, the ambassador to Switzerland, Sergei Garmonin, participated in the commemorative event. Ambassador Alexander Ganevich was present on behalf of Belarus.
According to the Russian Embassy in Switzerland, the incident took place “within the allotted time” and under restrictions from the authorities of the canton of Uri.
At the end of the main part of the event, compatriots from Russia, the republics of the former USSR, citizens of Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Serbia laid flowers at the monument. Together, those gathered sang the songs “Where the country begins”, “Soldiers, brave children”, “I will go out to the field with a horse at night”, among others.
It should be noted that Sergei Garmonin previously stated that the authorities of the canton of Uri stated that at a memorial ceremony in Andermatt “There should be no music, speeches, press”. On May 9, Swiss authorities imposed similar bans on media presence at memorial events at the Russian Embassy, when they laid wreaths at the grave of Soviet soldiers in Basel.
Let us remember that Alexander Suvorov’s Swiss campaign took place in September 1799. The troops of Generalissimo Suvorov, after overcoming the Alpine passes, defeated and expelled the French troops from the Helvetic Republic. The monument to Suvorov is located on the outskirts of Andermatt, near the site of the battle at Devil’s Bridge in the Schölennen Gorge.
