On Monday, the European Commission took action to restrict the sale of products deliberately containing microplastics, including glitter, cosmetics or medical devices.
According to a statement from the Community Executive, microplastics themselves and the products they have been added to will no longer be sold under the European Union’s regulation of chemicals (REACH).
The decision will “prevent around half a million tonnes of microplastics from being released into the environment,” the statement estimates, stressing that “the goal is to reduce intentional releases of microplastics from as many products as possible.”
