Google announces undersea cable system. The cloud will connect Portugal, Bermuda and the USA

This Monday, Google announced Nuvem, a new system of transatlantic submarine cables to connect Portugal, Bermuda and the United States, which the infrastructure minister calls “a very important investment.”

This new system, named after the Portuguese word for cloud, says the technology company, will “increase network resilience in the Atlantic and help meet growing demand for digital services.”

The route of the new cable “will add diversity to international routes and support the development of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure in the participating continents and countries.”

Cloud Landing Points “have seized on this opportunity and urgency and are quickly emerging as gateways and ‘hubs’ for international communications,” Google says.

In recent years, the Bermuda government has made “significant efforts to drive investment in submarine cable infrastructure and the creation of the Atlantic Digital Hub, including approving new legislation to create cable corridors and simplify licensing.”

With plans to dock in Portugal, Nuvem “is the latest member of Portugal’s submarine cable portfolio, which also includes Equiano, a recently completed system linking Portugal with Togo, Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa and St. Helena,” Google adds.

“Google’s investment embodies our vision for Portugal in the telecommunications and data sectors: establishing our country as a thriving communications gateway to Europe, promoting reliable connections with other continents. The Portuguese government considers this investment to be very important and it was only possible thanks to great coordination and dialogue between the ministry, Portuguese organizations and Google,” says Infrastructure Minister João Galamba, quoted in the statement.

“Our goal is to transform these information superhighways into catalysts that will attract additional investment in cutting-edge technology industries and propel the country towards effective digital transformation. This pursuit has been our constant focus in recent months, fueling our efforts to attract this type of investment. , by improving our communications infrastructure and defining a clear roadmap for the sector,” concludes the government official.

Nuvem “will not only be the first cable to be installed in this sustainable environment, but also the first to connect Bermuda to Europe,” the technology adds.

“The Bermuda Business Development Agency (BDA) welcomes Google’s announcement that Bermuda will be home to a new transatlantic cable on its path to becoming an Atlantic digital hub,” says David Hart, Executive Chairman (CEO) of the Bermuda Business Development Agency .

BDA “has long argued that Bermuda’s central location makes it an ideal arrival and connection point for submarine cables between the Americas, Europe and Africa, and we are delighted that these efforts have borne fruit. About 95% of global communications are carried out via submarine cables. networks, Bermuda’s role as a gatekeeper for international data traffic will provide greater network resiliency and redundancy for countries on both sides of the Atlantic in the coming decades,” he adds.

On the United States side, Nyvema will moor in South Carolina.

“The arrival of cable will further transform the state into a growing technology hub, increasing connectivity and job diversification,” following in the footsteps of Firmina, who arrived in South Carolina earlier this year and intends to connect with Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay.

“Scheduled to go live in 2026, the cloud will increase capacity, improve reliability and reduce latency for Google users and Google Cloud customers around the world,” the technology company says. Together with Firmina and Equiano, “he will create important new data corridors that will connect North America, South America, Europe and Africa, serving as a kind of underwater roots that strengthen the intercontinental network and time connects people and economies.” from around the world,” Google concludes.
