The Canadian government on Tuesday asked the speaker of the House of Commons to resign for inviting a former World War II Nazi soldier to attend a speech by the Ukrainian president.
Shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke in the House of Commons on Friday, Canadian MPs gave 98-year-old Yaroslav Gunka a standing ovation and House Speaker Anthony Rota introduced him as a war hero who fought for the First Ukrainian Division during the war. World War II – a division that fought alongside the war machine of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime.
Rota has already apologized for the incident and will meet party leaders in the House of Commons on Tuesday after two opposition parties on Monday demanded his resignation, citing a lack of political trust.
