A three-year-old girl was beaten to death this weekend in Evreux, France. The mother and stepfather were arrested and taken into police custody.
Firefighters responded to a cardiopulmonary arrest at the family’s home. Despite attempts at resuscitation and transfer to the University Hospital of Rouen, the girl did not survive.
Authorities suspected foul play because the victim was “covered in bruises.” The local prosecutor points out that the child, “enrolled in kindergarten, was not at school for a week, possibly to hide the bruises.”
“I have seen similar cases in my career, but never with such intensity,” he added.
The 27-year-old woman and her 29-year-old partner were presented to the investigating judge on Monday and are in pre-trial detention. The couple, who have been together for about a year, risk life in prison.
Early investigations indicate that both the girl and her six-year-old brother were subjected to “regular abuse over several months.”
