Serenity, a three-year-old American girl, shot herself at home while a family member was distracted by watching an American football game in Florida on Saturday, local media reported.
The moment, captured on CCTV, shows the child climbing onto the sofa and picking up a gun as family member Orlando Young jumps up to celebrate a point scored in a meeting he was watching on the computer.
“She looked like she was ready to grab the gun, but when it went off, I think the bullet missed her finger,” Young said. A family member claims the girl must have been under the care of her grandmother, who is not in the video.
“The police came because I called them,” explains Robin Fuller, another of the victim’s grandmothers.
The girl was taken to the hospital, where she is recovering. “They’re trying to take care of the finger, hopefully they can stop the bleeding,” Fuller said.
A family member who was with Serenity at the time of the shooting was arrested for neglect and is soon to appear in court on new charges after being involved in a fight with an inmate.
Fuller adds that the girl’s “safety” is too important to consider returning her to the home where the accident occurred.
