The clothing dealer was kidnapped Wednesday in central Maputo by armed men, Mozambican capital police spokesman Leonel Muchina told Lusa.
“We are taking measures to rescue the victim – a businessman who was kidnapped in his own store in the city center,” Muchina said.
The victim was inside the store when two men forced him out and into a vehicle driven by a third person, the spokesman said.
One of the men was armed with a pistol, which he used to threaten the victim.
Suspicions of a kidnapping in central Maputo began to spread when a video appeared on social media showing two people forcibly dragging a man from a clothing store into a car, which then took off.
Mozambique’s main cities have been hit by kidnappings of businessmen and their families, prompting the government to announce the creation of a special police unit to combat kidnappings.
