Dianne Feinstein, a leading figure in the US Democratic Party, died Thursday evening at the age of 90, a family source said. She was the longest-serving woman in the U.S. Senate and voted this Thursday.
In accordance with BBCThe California Democrat has faced questions for months over alleged memory and cognitive problems and previously announced she intended to resign at the end of next year but has resisted growing calls to leave her position.
Dianne Feinstein entered the Senate in 1992 after winning a special election and was re-elected five times, including in 2018, becoming the longest-serving senator ever, according to Reuters.
Dianne became mayor of San Francisco in 1978 following the assassinations of President George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk.
He was still chairman of the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors when Moscone and Milk were shot to death by former Supervisor Dan White. Hearing the shots, he ran to Harvey Milk’s office. As he looked for his wrist, his finger found a bullet hole.
