The United States has discovered an unprecedented concentration of Serbian forces on the border with Kosovo and is calling for their withdrawal, John Kirby, the National Security Council’s strategic communications coordinator, said in a Sept. 29 briefing.
“We are seeing a concentration of large Serbian forces along the border with Kosovo, including an unprecedented presence of Serbian artillery, tanks and motorized rifle units. “We believe this is a very destabilizing event.”Kirby said.
He also said that the concentration of troops continues throughout the week.
“We ask Serbia to withdraw these forces from the border”– he said.
He also expressed concern “growing tension and sporadic outbreaks of violence” on the border. The most serious of them, in northern Kosovo, killed three Serbs and a Kosovo police officer on September 24.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that the Serbs who died on September 24 were not terrorists, but “pushed to the limit” Kosovo Albanian authorities in Pristina. His compatriots in Kosovo and Metohija will consider them “heroes and martyrs.” At the same time, he called on the Serbs of Kosovo and Metohija to defend their rights peacefully.
