Three miners were killed in a shaft collapse at an artisanal gold mine near Chegutu, Zimbabwe, and authorities estimated more than 20 people were buried in the rubble.
“Three bodies have been found at the collapsed Bay Horse mine in Chegutu,” state television ZBC reported on its website today, citing Deputy Mines Minister Polite Kambamura.
The mine collapse occurred on Friday near Chegutu, about 120 kilometers west of Harare. Authorities believe 21 miners are buried under the rubble.
The bodies of three victims were found under rocks during a rescue operation “carried out by the government with the help of miners,” state television reported.
This southern African country contains numerous minerals, including platinum, diamonds, gold, coal and copper.
Due to widespread unemployment, many men work in abandoned mines or trespass into mines that are still in operation, and accidents are common.
In February 2019, at least 24 illegal miners died at the bottom of abandoned and flooded mines after a hurricane in central Zimbabwe, according to Agence France-Presse. In May of the same year, at least nine more people were killed in explosions at a gold mine in Mazowa (north).
