Romanian army radars detected a possible violation of national airspace during a night attack by Russian drones on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, the Romanian Defense Ministry reported on Saturday, citing Reuters.
After withdrawing from the Black Sea grain deal, Russia began attacking Ukrainian ports and warehouses along the Danube from Romania, which is Kyiv’s main alternative export route.
Fragments of possible Russian drones have been found in Romania three times this month, according to Reuters, raising security risks for NATO, whose members are committed to mutual defense.
“The Romanian army’s radar surveillance system detected a possible unauthorized entry into national airspace, with a signal detected en route to the city of Galati,” the Defense Ministry said.
In accordance with ReutersAlerts were sent to the phones of residents in the counties of Tulcea and Galati when swarms of drones were detected heading towards Ukraine, near the border with Romania.
NATO and Romanian officials have said there is no evidence that the Russian incursions near the border were a deliberate attack on Romania, but they consider the attacks reckless and destabilizing, according to Reuters.
