French police used drones to remove migrants at the border with Italy on Saturday evening, an Italian non-governmental organization (NGO) monitoring the situation there said this Sunday.
In the reports, migrants speak of “drones used by the gendarmerie.” [polícia francesa] to keep them away,” said Paolo Narcisi, president of the NGO Rainbow4Africa, describing the situation at the Oulx reception center at the border.
“We were informed about the situation by Red Cross volunteers who came to help,” Narcisi explained.
“The center is overcrowded, we estimate there are more than 180 migrants housed there,” Narcisi added, explaining that they decided to “put people to sleep on the floor.”
At 8am on Sunday morning, more than 40 migrants were allegedly pushed back into the forest, the organization said.
Rome has accused Paris of violating international principles of non-refoulement by failing to help Italy with the growing flow of migrants crossing the Mediterranean from Africa.
The European Court of Justice, in a decision on an appeal brought by several associations, found that France’s policy of refusing entry to citizens of other countries illegally staying on its borders with other European Union member states violates Community rights.
