The 2023 Nobel Prize season begins this Monday with the announcement of the Medicine Prize and continues until the 9th when the Economics Prize is announced.
During the week, the winners of the physics (Tuesday), chemistry (Wednesday), literature (Thursday) and peace (Friday) prizes will be announced. The announcement of honors in the field of economic sciences is scheduled for the 9th.
In the medical field, expert predictions include research into immune cells that can fight cancer, studies of the human microbiota, and work on the causes of narcolepsy as favorite candidates.
All nominations will be announced in Stockholm, Sweden, with the exception of the Nobel Peace Prize, which, as usual, will be awarded by the Norwegian Nobel Committee and will take place at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.
There have been 351 applications for the Nobel Peace Prize this year, with the war in Ukraine dragging on, the international community fragmented and disasters multiplying, raising the possibility that the award will not be awarded this year.
“In many ways it would be appropriate if the committee did not award the prize this year,” said Swedish professor Peter Wallensteen, an expert on international affairs.
“It would be a good way to draw attention to the seriousness of the global situation, as happened in the years after the two world wars,” he added.
But in Oslo, failure to find a winner among the hundreds of entries received would be seen as an admission of failure.
“It’s very difficult to imagine” such a scenario, said Nobel Committee Secretary Olav Njølstad, quoted by Agence France-Presse.
“I wouldn’t say it’s impossible, but the world needs something to set it on the right path,” he added, stressing that this year’s Nobel Peace Prize was “really necessary.”
Experts have floated Iranian women as possible candidates, who have expressed their anger since the death of young Mahsa Amini in September 2022 after being detained for allegedly violating the strict dress code imposed on women; war crimes investigators in Ukraine or climate change activists as the summer of 2023 was the world’s hottest on record and as bad weather, fires and floods devastate the entire planet.
The Fridays for Future movement, inspired by young Swede Greta Thunberg, Brazilian leader Raoni Metuktire, indigenous rights activist, the International Criminal Court, Iranians Narges Mohammadi and Masih Alinejad, Afghan journalist Mahbuba Seraj and Russian opponent Vladimir Kara-Murza are just a few names participating in the competition.
This year’s Nobel laureates will receive an additional million Swedish kronor, bringing the total amount received by laureates to 11 million Swedish kronor (about 925 thousand euros).
