On Tuesday morning, eleven climate activists from the group Climáximo blocked traffic on the Second Ring Road in Lisbon in the direction of Benfica Airport. They are all arrested.
The protest outside Galpa’s headquarters began at 9am and ended with drivers stopping the youths and pushing them off the road.
Two activists who were hanging from the viaduct were removed from the stairs. Lisbon firefighters arrived on scene to remove them safely. The PSP was mobilized, including elements of a special police unit. INEM was also called but did not have to intervene.
The protest caused huge queues on the roads, but traffic returned to normal around 11:30.
“Every two days, emissions in Portugal claim more lives than fires in Pedrogan. Governments have known for decades about the devastation and death of the climate crisis and have chosen to continue burning fossil fuels,” the environmental group said in a statement sent out in an essay. .
Climaximo has been a driving force behind controversial climate action. Let us recall that last week activists from the same group painted the façade of the Lisbon International Fair red on the day of the aviation event.
