The 50th anniversary of the military operation of November 25, 1975 is still outside the official program of parliamentary celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary of the revolution of April 25, 1974 and the 1976 Constitution.
At a press conference on Tuesday, the President of the Assembly of the Republic said that the organizing committee of the commemorative events, which includes members of the parties represented in parliament, decided that the program of initiatives should be coordinated.
“In the organizing committee, we decided that the dates and events that were unanimously read among us would be adopted as the program. We therefore decided to focus on the sequence of the revolution of April 25, 1974, the first free elections, the approval of the Constitution and the first elections to the Assembly of the Republic, the President of the Republic, regional and municipal autonomies,” explained Augusto Santos Silva.
Even on November 25, 1975, the former Minister of State and Foreign Affairs then emphasized that this “does not mean that there will not be other initiatives to celebrate other dates.”
“The initiatives of parliamentary groups, the leadership conference or myself are in this course,” he added.
Regarding the presence of the heads of state of the former Portuguese colonies at the ceremonial meeting on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974 in the Assembly of the Republic, Augusto Santos Silva stated that this institutional event is outside the orbit of the parliamentary commemoration committee. emphasizing that this involves interaction with other sovereign bodies.
“The ceremonial sessions of 2024, 2025 and 2026 will mark several milestones in the process of building our democracy, including, of course, April 25 itself. In accordance with the Rules of Procedure of the Assembly of the Republic, these sessions were planned and organized by me myself, after listening to the conference of leaders,” he began with an observation.
In other words, according to the President of the Assembly of the Republic, “the organizing committee is not involved in organizing ceremonial meetings.”
“This is a matter that the leadership conference will have to consider in due course and on which I will have to make a decision. Obviously, the necessary deliberation will be made at the leadership conference to achieve the greatest possible consensus,” he said, having the ear of Chegi leaders. and the Liberal Initiative, parties opposed to the presence of, for example, Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
At this point, the President of the Assembly of the Republic indirectly referred to the foreign policy powers of other sovereign bodies, namely the President of the Republic and the Government.
“Since several sovereign bodies are participating in the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary on April 25, our internal work will be related to relationships and interaction with other sovereign bodies,” he emphasized.
