Former US President Donald Trump appeared in court on Monday for the start of his civil fraud trial in New York, one of many legal battles he faces as he attempts to return to the White House in 2024.
In the case, which began Monday, Trump and his business group are accused of routinely defrauding banks, insurance companies and other institutions by misrepresenting their wealth to gain financial advantages in their businesses over many years.
The judge overseeing the case, Arthur Engoron, ruled on the main charge before the trial began, ruling that Trump had in fact inflated the value of his assets to conduct business and obtain loans.
