The first underground school will be built in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkov to protect students from successive attacks by Russia, the city’s mayor Igor Terekhov was quoted as saying. Reuters.
“This shelter will allow thousands of Kharkov children to safely continue full-time education even during missile threats,” Terekhov said in his Telegram account.
Before the start of the school year, on September 1, about 60 classes were created at metro stations, with more than a thousand students studying.
The war, which appears to have no end in sight, has killed thousands of people and displaced millions of civilians. According to the Ministry of Education of Ukraine, quoted by ReutersAcross the country, 363 educational institutions were destroyed and about 3,800 damaged.
The new school will be able to meet “the most modern regulatory requirements for protective structures,” said Igor Terekhov.
The size of the school and its opening date are not yet known.
