Cape Verde will review its higher education legal regime, which is in the process of restructuring, with a new model for the management of public universities that will rely on the participation of external organizations, the Prime Minister said today.
“In dialogue with higher education institutions (HEIs), the government will soon review the legal regime of higher education institutions and other legislation on higher education,” said Ulisses Correia e Silva, speaking at the opening of the new academic year at the university. Cape Verde (Uni-CV), the only public one in the country.
According to the head of government, the review will include, among other measures, an institutional and scientific assessment of higher education institutions to ensure the quality of the sector.
It will also standardize the organization and management model of public universities and private higher education institutions, as well as make adjustments to regulation.
“It also aims to standardize, taking into account best international practices, procedures for accreditation of university academic cycles, equivalence and recognition of academic degrees obtained abroad,” he added.
According to the head of government, a restructuring of higher education is already underway, which will have a new model for the management of public universities and will allow the participation of external actors from public, social and business circles.
With this measure, the Cape Verdean government intends to promote complementarity and synergy between public universities, as well as between them and private ones, added Ulisses Correia e Silva.
According to the Ministry of Education, approximately 10,000 students study at public and private universities in Cape Verde, divided into nine institutions.
For his part, Uni-CV Rector Arlindo Barreto said that the only public university in the country is transforming from an institution primarily focused on teaching to a university focused on research, and that the Student Statute is in effect this year.
While acknowledging the need to strengthen communication, the rector stressed that Uni-CV wants to work to show that it is the “best” university in Cape Verde.
“Show with aesthetics, ethics and rationality what we do outside the community and Cape Verde,” the rector emphasized, declaring that Uni-CV is taking “safe steps” to implement quality standards in all areas.
“Through shared commitment and motivation, we will also raise the level of quality of our university and thus respond with confidence and competence to the challenges of adaptation and development of our country,” said Arlindo Barreto.
This academic year, Uni-CV has expanded to the island of Fogo, offering courses in geology and agronomy, and is in the process of establishing the Higher Institute of Aeronautics and Tourism on the island of Sal, following the creation of the Universidad Técnico Atlantico (UTA). ), at São Vicente and the Institute of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (ICTA) in Santo Antana.
According to data published on its official page, the University of Cape Verde has approximately 4,600 students, 280 teachers and 135 non-teachers, divided between three university centers, with three doctoral degrees, 10 master’s degrees, two postgraduate degrees, 35 degrees and two professional courses .
