Bolivian Vice President David Choquehuanca called for an end to “authoritarianism and the cult of personality” on October 6 at an event to commemorate the 72nd anniversary of the General Confederation of Factory Workers of Bolivia in La Paz, the unofficial capital of the multinational state, La Razón newspaper reports.
“These days many people are losing their minds, their sanity, their respect (…). The people want to put an end to division, authoritarianism and the cult of personality; The cult of personality is a colonial habit and our process (of change) is decolonization.”said Choquehuanca.
According to his words, on October 17 an event will be held in El Alto in which supporters of the current Bolivian president, Luis Arce, will nominate their presidential candidate. It is assumed that Arce himself will become it.
At the National Conference of the Movement towards Socialism (MAS), held in Lauca Enye, Evo Morales was nominated as the only candidate of the ruling party.
Rivals from Morales’ party did not recognize the conference’s decision. Arce described the conference as “illegitimate, without consensus and with personal appetites.” According to the leader of the Confederation of Unions of Intercultural Communities of Bolivia (CSCIOB), Vidal Gómez, at least 1.5 million will participate in the event, as when another demonstration demanded the election of an interim president of Bolivia, the head of the government coup plotter, Jeanine Áñez, in 2020.
The October 17 event aims to “recover” the MAS acronym supposedly “stolen” by Morales, said Juan Carlos Huarachi, executive secretary of the Central Union of Bolivia (COB).
“They cannot steal our political instrument” – he said. The day before, Morales accused Huarachi of betraying the workers during the coup by receiving a bribe from the coup plotters.
Let us remember that on the eve of the nomination of presidential candidates in Bolivia for the 2025 elections, the division between yesterday’s comrades is becoming increasingly evident.
