A man was shot dead by police for driving a car into the Chinese consulate in San Francisco, USA. San Francisco police say “officers made contact with the suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred,” the agency said. Reuters.
San Francisco Police Sergeant Katherine Winters notes that it is not yet known “how many people were inside the consulate at the time of the collision,” but there are no data on casualties from this incident.
Police say the driver was “pronounced dead on arrival at hospital” despite the efforts of police and paramedics.
The Chinese Consulate in the United States released a statement describing the approach to the victim as “violent behavior within the consulate, posing a serious threat to the safety of persons and personnel and causing damage to consulate premises.” It also “strongly condemns” what the consulate statement called a “violent attack.”
A spokesman for China’s Foreign Ministry said the man, who eventually died, deliberately drove up to the consulate in an “attempt to kill” the people there.
Authorities are investigating.
