Brazil’s Supreme Electoral Court (TSE) began hearing on Tuesday three more lawsuits against former President Jair Bolsonaro, again for abuse of power in last year’s presidential election. Let us recall that in June the TSE already sentenced Bolsonaro to deprivation of the right to participate in elections until 2030 for the same crime.
The two actions refer to social media “directives” carried out by Bolsonaro in August and September 2022, at the height of the election campaign, which were filmed in the Palácio do Planalto, the president’s headquarters, in which he called for voting, which was It is prohibited to do this in a public building. The other concerns pre-election events with the participation of governors and artists, which took place in October in Planalto and at the official residence.
Bolsonaro is expected to be found guilty in all three cases and be banned from holding public office again. These new sentences do not extend the period during which the former president will be barred from voting because the sentences are not cumulative, but they do make appeals more difficult since he will have to appeal each sentence separately.
