Greta Thunberg was fined again by a court this Wednesday for disobeying police during a protest by environmental activists in July in southern Sweden.
The Malmö court sentenced her to a fine of 2,250 kroner (194 euros).
Swede Thunberg, who has already been fined for a similar situation, participated in the blockade of the oil terminal in Malmö on July 24, where several protesters sat on the floor, from where they were removed by the police.
On September 15, she was charged with insubordination for refusing to comply with police orders to leave the premises. He was then removed by two uniformed officers.
Thunberg, 20, acknowledged the facts but denied wrongdoing, saying fighting the fossil fuel industry was a form of self-defense in the face of the global and existential threat posed by climate change it causes.
“Science is on our side, morality is on our side. Nothing in the world can change this. I am ready to act based on existing conditions, even if it leads to more convictions,” she said after the verdict.
On June 24, the same court fined Thunberg 2,500 crowns for refusing to obey police orders when she participated in a similar blockade of the same oil terminal, which was removed by police, days earlier.
Greta Thunberg is expected to travel to neighboring Norway on Thursday to take part in a protest involving the indigenous Sami people. The protest is challenging the 151-turbine wind farm and calling for its removal because it threatens the way of life of deer herds. Activists argue that the energy transition should not come at the expense of indigenous rights.
Two years ago, Norway’s Supreme Court ruled that the turbines violated the rights of the Sami people, who have used the land for reindeer breeding for centuries. However, the Norwegian government has no plans to dismantle the wind farm.
Greta Thunberg has inspired a global movement of young people demanding more action on climate change after she held weekly protests in front of the Swedish parliament since 2018.
