The Party of Socialists and Democrats (SD) in the European Parliament (EP) has decided to suspend the activities of the Social Democratic Directorate (SMER), the party to which the elected Prime Minister of Slovakia Robert Fico, known for his rapprochement with the Kremlin and positions against support for Ukraine, belongs.
In its statement, S&D said it “supports the unanimous decision of the President of the Party of European Socialists to suspend the membership of the Slovak parties SMER and HLAS.” [Voz Social-Democracia]”.
The decision was a reaction to the Slovak government’s coalition with the far-right Slovak National Party (SNS): “The memorandum of understanding signed between the three parties is incompatible with the progressive values and principles of the European Family of Socialists and Democrats.”
