American director James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water provided a much-needed boost to the Chinese box office towards the end of the year, despite mixed reviews, the Xinhua news agency reported on December 27.
As of December 27, the film has grossed 742 million yuan ($106.69 million) in China. The sequel to the 2009 American sci-fi hit Avatar currently tops the Chinese year-end box office.
The American science fiction film impressed the viewer with its visuals, although some say that its story is too simple. However, its release helped bring many people back to theaters, with theater opening rates across the country topping 80% on its debut day, data from the Maoyan platform showed.
Maoyan currently predicts that Avatar: The Way of Water will gross around 1.15 billion yuan in China, well below the previously forecast 2 billion yuan.
The sequel “Avatar” now ranks ninth on the Chinese box office chart for all of 2022, covering all films shown this year, and the Chinese patriotic hit “Battle of Chosin Reservoir II” topped this year with more than 4 billion of yuan. In China, Avatar launched in January 2010 and was relaunched in March 2021. Its total fees in this country amounted to 1.7 billion yuan.
