The PKP accuses the EU of “cynicism and hypocrisy” and calls for a “strong voice” to stop the “massacre in the Gaza Strip”

This Monday, the PKP Secretary General accused the European Union of “hypocrisy and cynicism” regarding the conflict between Israel and Hamas, calling for a “strong condemnation” to stop the “massacre” in the Gaza Strip.

At a press conference after the meeting of the PKP Central Committee, which took place from Sunday to Monday, Paulo Raimundo confirmed that his party “distances itself and condemns” actions “that target the population and victimize innocent people”, but also condemns “Israel’s escalation of war against the Palestinian people.”

“It is worth emphasizing the hypocrisy and cynicism of all those who talk so much about international law, but who for so many years remained silent in the face of the brutality shown against the Palestinian people, and now continue to remain silent in the face of the massacres and crimes of the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip at the hands of the State of Israel,” he said.

When asked how he assessed the position of the European Union (EU) and the Portuguese government regarding this conflict, the PCP Secretary General replied that the EU fits into his idea of “hypocrites and cynics”.

“It is enough to see the statements made, the position, what was said and not said, (…) to understand what the problem of hypocrisy and cynicism has to do with it,” he said, also hinting at the relocation of the presidents of the European Commission and the European Parliament to Israel in the past Friday.

According to Paulo Raimundo, “these are the same people who have been silent for years” about the situation in Palestine, who are now also silent “in the face of ongoing war crimes, this massacre that is coming from Israel to the Gaza Strip.”

“Not a single word, not a single condemnation, not a single action or initiative is heard from them to stop the crime being committed, just as they not only do not condemn, but also support the dangerous attempts at prohibition in various parts of the country. peace, demonstrations for peace and solidarity with the Palestinian people,” he said.

The PKP leader compared the ultimatum given by Israeli authorities to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip – ordering them to leave the north and go south – to telling a man that his house will be bombed, “but don’t leave the living room.” and go to the bathroom.”

“This is what is being done to the Palestinian people, whether they belong to Hamas or not. And it was on this occasion that we needed to hear a strong voice of condemnation and make it stop, because if Israel is isolated in this process it will quickly stop,” he said.

The PKP leader also added that the solution to the conflict between Israel and Hamas “is like many others: all it takes is the right word at the right time and the right force, from an international perspective, to stop this conflict.” “

Regarding the position of the Portuguese government, Paulo Raimundo stated that the state “has the responsibility to respect and enforce, using the forces and space available to it, the resolutions of the United Nations (UN).”

“I think that this issue is not up for debate, that is, the recognition that the solution to the conflict involves the creation of two states, as well as the creation of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine: this is the position of the Portuguese government.” , he said, reiterating that the executive branch must confirm this “in all cases.”

Asked whether he also believed that the statements of the President of the Republic amounted to “hypocrisy and cynicism,” Paulo Raimundo replied that, from what he had heard, the statements of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa did not live up to these adjectives.

Raimundo also reiterated that the current conflict is “inseparable from decades of occupation and policies of oppression” of the Palestinian people by Israel, and when asked if he considers Hamas a terrorist organization, said its history “shows that it can serve many things, including the interests of the Palestinian people are very unclear,” but not the Palestinian people.
