A teacher was killed and two people were seriously injured on Friday in a knife attack at a school in Arras, in Pas-de-Calais, northern France. A security guard and another teacher were also stabbed. The 20-year-old attacker of Chechen origin was arrested, as was his 17-year-old brother.
A young man said to be a former student of the school has been charged by security services over his alleged involvement in Islamic radicalism, authorities said. According to eyewitnesses, the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is great” in Portuguese) during the attack. The motive for the crime is still unknown, but the anti-terrorism department of the French prosecutor’s office will begin an investigation. So far, nothing indicates a connection between the attack and the current situation in Israel. French President Emmanuel Macron visited the school and the National Assembly in Paris suspended the session in a show of solidarity.
