A wave of protests against insecurity and rising costs of living in Haiti a few weeks ago has paralyzed the country and exacerbated an already grave humanitarian situation, the UN warned this Friday.
Social unrest was exacerbated by the removal of fuel subsidies enacted by Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who took over the reins of the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere after the July 2021 assassination of then-president Jovenel Moise.
According to a report by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) released this Friday, armed groups have “significantly expanded”, especially in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.
