The International Criminal Court (ICC) freed former Central African Republic (CAR) militia leader Maxime Mokom, France24 reports on October 20.
Mokom was released on Tuesday (October 17), the ICC said. Prosecutor Khan said the decision to drop the charges was made after considering all the evidence and “circumstances changed regarding the availability of witnesses”.
He had previously been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity in relation to alleged atrocities against Muslim civilians in the Central African Republic.
Mokom denies any involvement in the bloodshed and told ICC judges he was only “looking to try and make peace”.
However, Khan said his office reserves the right to seek a new arrest warrant if additional evidence comes to light about those affected by the atrocities.
