Torrense, from the II League, qualified for the fourth round of the Portuguese Cup after defeating first division team Rio Ave 2-1 this Sunday in a match played in Torres Vedras.
Cristian Tassano opened the scoring for the Torres Vedras emblem at 13, Josué Sa equalized for Vila Condences at 76, but Welton at 80 guaranteed triumph for the Oeste team, which advances to the next round of the competition.
Rio Ave, playing in the I League, took control of the game from the first minute, but the second-tier team scored first, having eliminated Oriental in the previous round.
In the 13th minute, following a corner from the attacking right, Welton headed to the second post, into the area where Uruguayan defender Cristian Tassano seemed to have no trouble putting Torres Vedras’ side ahead.
Luis Freire’s side held the lead until the break, with Torrense relying on counter-attacks, although the attempts did not lead to a change in the score.
At the age of 50, Bruno Ventura, already in the penalty area, tested the attention of Ricardo Fernandes, and in the following moments it was Neneko Renteria who created danger with a hangover shot from the corner.
And if Rio Ave tried to equalize, the truth is that the best scoring opportunities belonged to Torrense. At 57 years old, Antoine Carnegie ran almost half the field unhindered, but shot just wide of the goal defended by Jonathan.
In the following minutes the pace of the game slowed down, and in the final period the match picked up momentum again.
At 76, Josué Sa headed in the equalizer from a won corner after Costinha had come very close to scoring in the previous game.
The draw did not last long, however, as four minutes later Welton appeared at the far post to successfully finish a cross from Joaozinho’s left to take Torrense into the next stage of the main event.
Rio Ave are the second Ligue 1 team to be eliminated in the third round of the Portuguese Cup after Moreirense knocked Paredes out of the Portuguese Championship.
