Three men and a woman were arrested last Saturday for their suspected involvement in the kidnapping of a businessman in the city of Maputo, the National Police Investigation Service (Sernik) said.
Sernic’s spokesman, Hilario Lole, quoted this Monday by the daily Notícias, said that the victim was kidnapped on Saturday morning and rescued in the afternoon of the same day in a house in the town of Matola, Maputo province, in the presence of two of the four alleged perpetrators of the kidnapping.
Lole said the three men told authorities they were acting at the direction of a woman who said she was a lawyer.
The woman denied any involvement in the kidnapping, but claimed that the victim owed her money for legal services she provided.
Mozambique’s main cities have been hit by kidnappings, mainly targeting businessmen and their families, prompting the government to announce the creation of a special police unit to combat kidnappings.
