This Wednesday, the Lisbon City Council approved the presentation of the Honorary Key of the City to the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, Humaro Sissoko Embalo, as part of his official visit to Portugal.
At a closed meeting of the municipal executive, the proposal to ratify the decree approving the awarding of the Honorary Key of the City to the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau was approved, with the BE voting against, the PKP abstaining, and voting for the remaining elected, namely the leadership of the PSD/SDS-PP, PS, Livre and the councilors of the Cidadan for Lisbon movement (elected by the PS/Livre coalition).
“Given the official visit to Portugal of His Excellency the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau on October 25 and the holding of the corresponding ceremony with the presentation, as usual on these occasions, of the Key of Honor of the City of Lisbon,” the motion said, saying it was not possible to schedule a vote on document before the reception of Umaro Sissoko Embalo.
The reception in honor of the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau at the City Hall of Lisbon, where he received the Key of Honor of the City, took place this morning, during a closed meeting of the municipal executive to ratify Order No. 168/P. /2023, published in the 2nd Appendix to the Municipal Gazette No. 1548 of October 19, 2023.
The executive body of the Lisbon Chamber consists of 17 members, seven of whom are elected from the Novos Tempos coalition (PSD/CDS-PP/MPT/PPM/Alliance), who are the only members with specific responsibilities and govern without an absolute majority – three from the PS, two from the PCP, three from Cidadaãos Por Lisboa (elected by the PS/Livre coalition), one from Livre and one from BE.
Justifying the vote against the proposal, the Left Bloc (LE) stated that “it stands with the Guinean people, who took part en masse in the last elections to defeat President Oumaro Sissoko Umbalo and the parties that support his dictatorial political project,” citing that followed this. the various demonstrations that the Guinean diaspora held in Portugal against the regime of terror in recent years in Guinea-Bissau.
“The last legislative elections were a moment of great social mobilization against persecution, kidnapping and looting. The Guinean diaspora views the figure of President Umaro Sissoko Umbalo as a threat to the freedoms and guarantees of a democratic state,” BE noted.
Sissoko Embalo began a state visit to Portugal on Monday, the first such visit by a Guinean president to Portugal in five decades.
On Monday, the President of the Republic of Guinea-Bissau considered his state visit to Portugal “a source of pride” and discounted the manifesto of indignation of Guinean students and workers published on the eve of the trip.
Umaro Sissoko Embalo said he was not concerned about “the people who ordered and paid” for what he called “four or five failures” when reporters asked him about a manifesto by Guinean activists, students and workers in Portugal that they blame on the Portuguese president. and the government to “clean up” Sissoko’s image.
Today’s agenda for the visit to Portugal, in addition to a meeting with the President of the Lisbon City Council, Carlos Moedas (SPD), includes a meeting with the ambassadors of the Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries (CPLP) and a working meeting at the headquarters of the Portuguese-speaking organization.
On Thursday, Umaro Sissoko Embalo will be received at the Assembly of the Republic with military honors and will have a meeting with Augusto Santos Silva, President of the Assembly of the Republic.
