Republican Mike Johnson, representative of Louisiana’s 4th District, was elected leader of the House of Representatives this Wednesday after three weeks of chaos in the US Congress.
Johnson received 220 votes, three more than the 217 he needed to be elected speaker, uniting various factions that had so far shown reluctance to support a single candidate in the face of Kevin McCarthy’s historic ouster in early October. The congressman will lead a short majority in a divided chamber of 221 Republicans and 214 Democrats and will have to grapple with a stopgap budget that expires Nov. 17.
Belonging to the most conservative wing of the Republican majority, the new leader, 51, is considered an ardent ally of Donald Trump. He led an initiative signed by more than 100 Republican lawmakers in support of the Texas trial aimed at overturning Joe Biden’s 2020 victory and defended the former president during impeachment.
